Miss Penni,

I am flattered and deeply honored that you would entrust the Thread of of Rambi to my charge. Such an awesome task for this humble threadster. I gave careful thought to this exalted obligation. I studiously mulled over the weighty responsibility you had conferred upon me. After much introspective thought and deliberation, it was with deep regret that I came to conclude that I was woefully incapable of carrying out your wishes in leading the good folk of Rambi in your absence.

I could not, in all good conscience, forbid Janice to bring her rattlings. I'm rather fond of the little creatures and find them vaguely adorable in a quaint sort of way. They are clean and quiet and do such cute little tricks. In your absence, Alexa deigned to ply her marvelous and complex party tricks on other threads, and I felt overwhelming compulsion to draw her back into the fold. Not only that, she's recently taken to hanging out with some repulsive science fiction character!

Alas, I could not inhibit the free flow of free-flowing fun and frolic and the free-flowing libations that would surely flow free without your steady and guiding presence. I myself could not refrain from smoking my noxious cigarettes for that great a length of time and dared not step outdoors.

Ah, but not being one to shirk my duties, I and our fellow threadsters came up with this compromise: We all took off for another place of amusement, albeit a lesser place than the regal and sparkling Thread of Rambi. We reluctantly decided upon this course of action, so that you might, as solemnly promised, return to the Thread of Rambi and find it as you left it--pristine and unblemished, freshly oiled and shined Hepplewhite, and all.

Where did we go, you might ask? Why, we took a leaf from Douglas Adams and went to the restaurant at the end of the universe, near the moon. We the witty and charming rebels of the Thread of Rambi provided the atmosphere. A great time was had by all.

Please rest assured that I will do my utmost to ensure that you, the foundress of this great thread, corner post #8000 to fill with amusement and edification for us all. Of course, Alex may beat you to it and I, of course, have no control over this post-filching except to admonish and beseech and see if it does any good. Alex, consider yourself admonished and beseeched.

It should go without saying that all of us of The Thread of Rambi hope you enjoyed yourself in The Big Apple and anxiously await a full accounting of your excursions.

I wish to add that I think it somehow fitting that you share a birthday with Erma Bombeck. As to sharing it with Anais Nin, I shall leave that one up to you. <vbg>

<off topic - if such is possible here> The report of some sort of spill on the Carquinez Straits proves to be a false alarm, sort of. When the sun rose the following morning, the water in the straits was as clear as ever, with no sign of any spill or debris. All I can think is that whatever was there was something that sank quickly or blew away. And no, I had not been imbibing when I saw what looked to be a large and nasty spill on the Carquinez Straits. How could anyone possibly think that of me??!! I was absolutely and unequivocally sold cober at the time!!
