Michael Medved on Media Bias
Liberal Media blog

I had the amazing privilege yesterday of interviewing Michael Medved in front of a live audience at a dinner meeting of the Downtown Seattle Republican Club. The topic was "Media Bias: What's the Motivation?"

Among his points (these are not necessarily exact quotes)--

In the last several decades we have been living with the pretense that the media should somehow be objective. This is an historical anomaly that arose from the Federal Communications Act of the 1930s and the "Fairness Doctrine". In the early days of the Republic, the media (newspapers) were unabashedly opinionated. The alternative media -- cable news, talk radio, Internet -- are now bringing us back to the normal state of affairs with a wider range of viewpoints.

Television is an inherently liberal medium. Visuals appeal to emotion, not reason; Bad news is more interesting than good news and it is also invites liberals to demand that government do something to solve the problem.

The biased media really does influence public opinion. Examples: Walter Cronkite turning the tide against the Vietnam War; Clinton's narrow victory in 1992 was attributable to the media turning against Bush 41; Bush 43's margin would be higher than it is if it weren't for the media's bias.

Somewhat off topic, but in answer to a question from the audience -- "Why are Jews Democrats?" -- historical inertia; many Jews have substituted liberalism for religion; Historically, more American Jews have been entrepreneurs than members of labor unions, yet for some reason the perceived connection between Jews and unions has persisted. An increasing number of Jews are turning Republican.
