Were you using the old Gmail screen format? If so, perhaps they forced you into the new one.

If that is so, try this:

On the left side, above the COMPOSE box there is a red Gmail with a down arrow next to it. Click on that to get to Contacts.

Once in Contacts, on the left side, above the NEW CONTACT box there is a red Contacts with a down arrow next to it. Click on that to get back to Gmail.

I am just guessing here so it could be something completely different. Maybe your computer has been hijacked by the Elbonian Mob (reference Dilbert)
