Well as you know single payer isn't on the table.

Sure it is. That's what this entire argument is about. The Ds want single payer, and see government option as a stepping stone to getting it. And frankly, they're right. If they can get government option, they WILL HAVE single payer. Eventually.

And the last specific poll I saw something like 70% supported a public option.

Uh, not exactly.

They want it, so long as they don't have to pay for it. Only 40% were willing to pay AS MUCH AS $500/year in taxes (already a murky concept, when you take into account just what constitutes a "taxpayer"). A $500 increase in taxes, of course, doesn't come close to covering ANY of the proposed legislation, even the Republican's proposal.

As someone else here pointed out, it is highly suggestive that taxpayer's expectations are totally unrealistic. Less than half are willing to pay even $500 to get a "public option", and $500 won't even come close to doing it.

We're talking about legislation that eliminates any hope of ever seeing a balanced budget again in this country. Taxpayers are idiots, but even THEY can see the problem with that.
