If you force a quick conversion away from oil the economic costs (well in to the trillion range) could well result in quite a few deaths, quite possible millions of deaths.

The deaths will increase most in the third world were things are already marginal, but less economic growth (actually some degree of economic decline) will cause direct and indirect deaths in developed countries as well.

Any quick transition away from oil will almost certainly cause a lot more harm than benefit, whether your counting dollars, lives, or just about any other important measure.
