06/19/97 - `Sewer Sludge' Powering Fuel Cell in Japan

Tokyo, Japan - Japanese researchers have developed a way to turn "sewer sludge" into hydrogen that they're now using to power a 200-kilowatt fuel cell, reports Reuters. Yokohama's sewer department, while purifying sewage water, ends up with large quantities of sludge made up of human, domestic and industrial wastes. Gases produced from the sludge are comprised of 65 percent methane - a chief component of natural gas - and 35 percent carbon dioxide. The gases are then fed through a system that produces hydrogen, which is then run through a fuel cell to generate enough electricity to power 100 average households. The entire system, which has reportedly been operating for 30 days, measures 11-by-23 feet. A Yokohama government official claims "It's the world's first fuel cell using methane extracted from sewage sludge."
