Bill,

I had a 'special project' back in early 2003 where we worked with the 135th Signal Battalion 82nd Airborne on an 802.11 project. We developed a hardened kit with an 802.11 Bridge and another AP. This permitted each vehicle to support multiple wireless phones and pc's and use the bridge to connect to other vehicles.

Each 'kit' was smaller than the one person/one call radio it replaced.

With a towed pop up antennae - we could create a wireless mesh 20km wide. We demonstrated 80km communication (using a mobile base station with larger antennae).

What they had that was 'Milspec' was utter crap and went back to the 70's and 80's.

John
