Like all memes, it strikes a chord. It also has some serious flaws. No one is suggesting nationalizing the apple tree. (Well, maybe a few are...) If Tom is compensated for his investment, his time, provided a good roi and some profit, there would still be lots of apples left over. In this example, Nature is doing most of the work. People should be compensated for their industriousness, their inventiveness, for taking risks... but at some point it becomes greed, one of the seven deadly sins... Just another perspective...
