Read an excellent article in The Atlantic last night--The Art of Interrogation--that indirectly sheds a bit of light on OBL's failure to make any kind of decisive appearance, thereby suggesting his death or disability. Since immediate public announcement of the capture of a terrorist bigwig does nothing but alert his cohorts, scattering them, it is best to keep the news secret for as long as possible so that interrogation can take place before networks are rolled up. This is probably what happened with Sheik Mohammed, who is rumored to have been babbling like a brook many weeks before his probably staged capture was announced. If OBL has been captured, it is best to keep the news secret for as long as possible in order to extract information from him which, according to the article, is not too difficult a thing to do even using more or less humane methods. There are also political reasons at play for not immediately revealing that OBL is dead or captured. Wouldn't Bush rather announce the news later rather than sooner, when the Dems are in high spirits, having nominated Clark as either a Pres. or VP candidate and he is blathering about Bush's failures on the war on terror?
