RE: "Free PCs" - IMO, the more AOL or whoever gives out free PCs, the sooner households that would otherwise have been too "shy" to enter into the net world will get on the net, get crazy like the rest of us, and realize they need a REAL PC (ie. DELL) with REAL CHIPS (ie. INTEL) to do all the snazzy things you can do on the net.

This is a very important point and it bears repeating.

The faster the households that don't have pcs adopt them, the better it is for the industry. Everything from then on sells at a faster rate.

These pc's will not be free. The change is only going to be in how they get paid for. The financing of the pc entry into the other 50% is all that this is about. "FREE PCS" is a terminology may well put a mindset in the public consciousness that they might as well get one if they're free - so they do.

It's a good thing for the industry.

And as far as upgrading, the internet and what it bring's to the table are what is now propelling upgrading by non-business users. It reminds me of the change from B&W to color in the TV business. How many B&W tv's are sold now? How many of those "free pc" buyers will be using the same old pc to interconnect with the world in 2003? I'm willing to bet that many of them will be surfing around with much more than what they'll see this year.

And who will be selling most of those chips?

Intel and it's boxmaker distributors.

Who else will benefit?

Society as a whole.

There is a big transformation going on and this is JUST THE BEGINNING.
