To be fair, that depends what premise you accept. Some people here accept the premise that a super power can engage in colonial type activities- meddling in the internal affairs of other nations- and that is ok. If you accept that what we did to Iraq was ok- if you accept that they bore all the blame for the Iraq/Kuwait war, and that the conditions imposed on them were fair, and further, that we have a real interest in making sure those conditions are followed to the letter, then, if you have a set idea of "justice," you might be able to really deeply and truly believe this is a just war. The problem, as I see it, is that many of the anti-war folks do not accept ANY of the premises Bush accepts. That is obviously going to create disagreement. It does not mean the other side is disingenuous, in fact, one could argue they are altogether too ingenuous.
It takes a real naive innocence to accept black and white thinking- like America=totally Good, and Iraq=totally bad....
which of course we see a lot of. Bad isn't bad enough, they have to be ALL bad. It isn't good enough that Saddam is a despot, we have to connect him to 9/11. That kind of thinking is very innocent, in some ways. (of course the results of that thinking are far from innocent, but the thinking itself, very naive) |
