Semi-OT:(Proteomics info)Hardware firms ride biotech wave

…Advocates say proteomics, identifying proteins in cells, could supply information needed for more practical medical products than gene-sequencing genomics. Complex proteins command bodily functions and the vast majority of all drugs work by interacting with them.
''There is a growing belief that proteomics can be bigger than genomics,'' said Mazar. ''Proteomics should tell you a lot more about disease states than genomics.''
Basic mass spectrometry instruments may run $150,000, but a complete system involving sophsticated computer hardware and software, capable of analyzing thousands of proteins in a blood or tissue sample, can cost nearly $1 million.
Researchers spend about $100 million a year on instruments used in proteomics, but some aggressive estimates believe that figure could grow to $1 billion. Waters is not alone in that field, but counts itself among a group of leaders.
Who will produce the breakthrough biotech products of the future remains an investor's crap shoot, but every competitor will need to buy the equipment to try.
