Ascend Announces New "Service In A Box" Model for Customers Buying Support Contracts Through Distributors and Resellers; New Advantage-Pak Services Bring Lower Costs, Consistent Q

Business Wire via Dow Jones

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc.
(NASDAQ:ASND) today introduced a new service program that will make it easier
for customers to purchase support for Ascend equipment through third-party
resellers and distributors. The Advantage-Pak Services are pre-packaged service
plans that simplify everything from registration to line provisioning, all at a
low price and with uniform quality. Advantage-Pak gives customers the
confidence of getting support directly from Ascend regardless of where they
purchase their equipment.

"With the complexity of today's networking environments, choosing support
plans is almost as complicated as choosing equipment," said John Pohl, manager,
service marketing. "Our Advantage-Pak Services take the guesswork and
inconsistency out of buying support plans through a multi-tier distribution
network. Customers get the best combination of quality products and quality
service right out of the box."

Ascend has designed the program to be attractive to distributors and resellers
as well as to customers buying service contracts. Many channel partners have
limited or no support capabilities or they have customers located so far away
that it makes support unprofitable. The Advantage-Pak program makes it possible
to increase profit margins and customer satisfaction without increasing support
costs.

Advantage-Pak Services are available for all MAX and Pipeline customers and
can be purchased as either one-year or three-year programs. Additionally,
Advantage Pak offers multiple service programs to address various support
requirements such as on-site installation, premium remote support (including
24x7 priority technical support, overnight advance replacement services,
software support and authorized on-line web access) and standard or priority
on-site maintenance (including all parts, labor, travel and expenses, priority
technical support and authorized on-line Web Access).

Availability

Advantage-Pak Services will be available to customers in North America in
August 1997.
