According the the World Health Organization (WHO), HIV infection rates in five key groups remain stubbornly high ........ Female sex workers are 14x more likely to have HIV than the general population, gay men are 19x, transgender women 50x and injecting drug abusers also 50x more likely. The fifth group is people who are incarcerated or in other closed settings. WHO strongly recommends that men who have sex with men employ pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by taking antiretroviral AIDS drugs in order to give themselves another layer of protection. PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection by as much as 92% in high risk people. [ What about people who have inject drugs or have sex with female prostitutes aka sex workers? Shouldn't they take antiretroviral AIDS drugs too? ] seekingalpha Speaking only from the standpoint of healthcare costs, wouldn't it make sense to tell them to just not do those things that put them at risk? Is it gonna kill them to not do those things that might give them a fatal disease? '
