I have tracked it for a few years although never as a precise timing tool, I use it as a measure of the larger trend in place. I have however noticed that a week with significant short covering by the commercials has generally resulted in a major bear rally, and they have not been long since early 2000.

I track the SPX mainly and the commercials were record long near the 1994 bottom, 1998 bottom and in late 1999. Went short around the spring 2000 and built a record long position by Sept 2001 if I recall.
