The issue I'm having with using notional value of derivatives as a measure of max pain is that as long as only one side of the counterparty explodes, no harm no foul, the group as a whole just goes back to square one.

E.g. these guys created these this magic wealth out of thin air, I'm confused how derivatives and credit swaps become reality when neither the money or a method to value the intrinsic exists.

I suppose this is why a meltdown is inevitable.
