Jewish tradition says that Adam relayed G-d's commands to Eve, adding that if they even touched the Tree of Knowledge, they would die. The snake overheard, and the first thing he did was to push Eve against the tree, then say, 'see? we didn't die. The other is false as well'.

So Judaism blames both Adam and Eve. Christianity, which was much more influenced by the misogynous Greeks (you're right about the local misogyny predating Islam, though Islam has provided a good climate for it to flourish), blamed Eve in particular. Thus St. John Chrysostom called women "a desirable calamity".
