Hi lml,
Re: the CLECs are at a competitive disadvantage, particularly in the residential space, where they have recently made a decision to expand their market presence. A personal note. I have a good friend who works as a computer consultant in SF. He recently got ADSL service at his residence, which is less than 1,000 feet from the downtown PacBell CO. DSL should have been a slam dunk, but the advertising was 18 months in advance of the availability. When it finally came time to do the install, the tech was a no show. Second time around, a week later, the fellow who came out was so utterly clueless that my friend, who had done previous xDSL installs for his clients had to take over the job. The SBC installer was simply too incompetent to do the work. Now, my conclusion is this. The ILECs are set on a tactical course of action to 1) make sure that the CWA gains no traction in DSL, just as was the case with ISDN and 2) the general public will not get generally satisfactory service from the ILECs, nor from the CLECs for the foreseeable future. In the case of the former, because of a conscious decision to sabotage the future, which doesn't look as profitable as the past; and in the case of the latter, because of sheer lack of talent in the technical end and determinedly mediocre customer service to match the hype of the marketers.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
BTW, I concur with your observation on the affirmative action angle, however unPC.... :))
Have a great weekend, Ray |
