The "small print" in the retail numbers that no one cares to mention. Americans are spending more on subsistence items. Food and beverages spending up 1.8%, gasoline up 1.7%. Is it because folks in the US rubbed their tummies after XMAS and said, "you know Ma, I really have a hankering to chow down this month"? No way, it's higher prices coming through. I just received my natural gas bill, gawd, and it's never below freezing here. It'll get worse, and you heard it here first.
