"tremendous positive value" for Europe, I'd say. The historic importance of the alliance is that there was someone to drive Nazis out of their countries, help rebuild the war (i.e. Marshall Plan), keep the Russians out (in the process putting the American homeland at risk from nuclear attack), suppress the Balkan ethnic cleansing wars so they didn't spread and destablize a large part of the continent. Having Europeans love and respect us made it easier for us to do the occassional job like that.

Now I agree its in our interest to have done all that, but seems to me this alliance is more valuable to Europe than to us. I don't see that Europe has done (since Lafayette's day) or is likely to ever do anything of remotely comparable importance for America.
