I believe short sales are reported as margin, so some of your conclusions may not hold. I sold some covered calls on NTAP today. Someone paid me $340 for the right to buy NTAP at $90 sometime in the next 20 months. Since $90 represents a healthy profit to me on my most expense shares, I was more than happy. Don't understand why someone would do this (obviously, or I would be the buyer), but I'm not complaining.
