Is it OK for an American company with short and intermediate term monopolistic powers in the market place to "DUMP" (think browser) its product on the market short term in order to create a monopoly long term?

Perhaps this would be a good question to pose to Netscape. They were the seers who determined this to be the way to succeed. Like someone pointed out here before, it's right in the Netscape prospectus. How do you answer this, Hal?

My answer is that for evey penalty imposed on MSFT for "dumping" browser software, Netscape gets double the penalty for originating the idea and putting it into words in their IPO prospectus. Sounds fair to me.

In addition Hal, everyone knows that neither MSFT nor Netscape nor anyone would be interested in giving away the "browser" client if it were not for the expensive internet server side software package. The sites that wish to serve up html content in a big way are the ones who pay the freight.

FURTHER, this whole issue of "dumping" being a bad thing studiously ignores the fact that there is a whole industry called "shareware" which as been built up on the very premise of giving away software in the hopes of having one's program catch on with the masses.

BMC Software (BMCS) is a very successful publicly traded company which began its existence by giving away its software on a shareware basis.

Let's sic the DOJ on BMCS! They're obviously guilty of dumping! Gee Hal, we could have ourselves a good ol' witch-hunt going here real fast. Somebody go get the fuel while others round up the guilty parties!
