As for BJP contesting on its own, why should it if it feels that coalitions are the way to go? Why should it live in a fool's paradise, like the Congress(I), and believe that it, and only it has this magic cure for India's problems?

Well, there are sections (actually large chunks) of the BJP that believe that they have not only the answer for all of India's problems, but also the blueprint for "Akhand Bhaarat". Unless the NDA coalition jettisons that crowd, I don't think it will last long.

Contrary to what happened last time, I think this time the allies will stay put, even though they will use their leverage to extract their pound of flesh, while a power-struggle will take place between the moderates and the extremists within the BJP, and that is what will determine the lifetime of the coalition.
