600...Vermont governor looks to cut 600 state jobs

(AP:MONTPELIER, Vt.) Gov. Jim Douglas called Thursday for laying off 600 state workers, in addition to 60 already being trimmed, as part of an effort to fill a budget gap for the next fiscal year estimated at more than $200 million.

Douglas also proposed a range of cuts in human services programs, including eliminating an effort to fill in the gaps in federal Medicare drug coverage, asking Medicaid recipients to pay higher premiums, and kicking people off welfare when they don't meet work requirements.

He proposed raising annual car registration fees from $60 to $77.50 but offsetting that increase by dropping the state car inspection requirement to every other year instead of annually, a move his aides said will save the average Vermont motorist $35 over two years.

And he reiterated his call for changes to state school funding that critics say will put $63 million of upward pressure on local property taxes.
