You might want to try some creative imaging with them to stimulate their writing as follows. You can substitute the object with anything but for some reason the chair works really well.

Start by asking them to close their eyes and imagine a chair. Is it wood? Metal? Soft? Hard? What kind of fabric, if any, is on it? How is it decorated? Is it simple, ornate, etc? Who sits in this chair? Does it belong to anyone? Who? A Queen? An elderly man? Keep going with this type of questioning as the students keep their eyes closed and make decisions about the chair.

When you feel the students have a good idea of what their chair is like instruct them to immediately, without any talking or contact with their classmates, take out paper and pen and begin writing about their chair in story, poem, essay, etc. form. Give them at least 20 minutes of uninterrupted writing time. You'll be amazed at the creativity and imagination and commitment this writing assignment will extract from them. I performed this activity in conjunction with Nancy Atwell's Writer's Workshop and it was amazing!!! Good Luck!!
