It's not. IMO, it's prior restraint and violates the First Amendment.
Lewis Carroll would love it though. "'First the punishment, *then* the trial,' said the Red Queen." [or something like that]

I would question the impartiality of a judge who orders a retraction prior to a hearing on the truth or falsity of the statements.
How to get a fair trial from a judge whose mind is apparently already made up? How often do you hear a judge admit error?
