460....Polaris to eliminate 460 jobs as demand weakens

(AP:MEDINA, Minn.) Polaris Industries Inc., which makes leisure vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles and motorcycles, said late Wednesday that it will eliminate 460 jobs as it tries to keep pace with softening demand.

The recreational vehicle industry has struggled as consumers pull back on discretionary spending due to the prolonged housing downturn, escalating food costs, diminishing credit and unemployment concerns.

The reduction includes about 160 full-time jobs, or approximately 5 percent of the company's work force. The remaining positions include approximately 300 contractors, part-time and temporary jobs in several plants and across all product lines, the company said late Thursday.

Medina, Minn.-based Polaris said the job cuts are ongoing and will be finished "over the coming weeks."
