In yet anther loss of jobs for the region, clothier Liz Claiborne Inc. announced Thursday it would close its Mount Pocono distribution center, idling 350 workers.

The nearly 1 million-square-foot facility will stop operations in March, employees were told.

A company statement alluded the “future realities of the economy and our business,” and expressed regret that people were losing jobs.

The facility has been a fixture in Monroe County, so much that Chuck Leonard of the Pocono Mountain Economic Development Corp. thought the company’s place was secure. Built by Yves Saint Laurent in the early 1980s, the building is the first occupant of Monroe County’s first business park. Claiborne purchased the building in the mid-1980s.

The company took advantage of a $2 million Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority loan for an expansion and technological upgrades in the 1990s. The company leased another nearby building to handle returns, and for a time, employment swelled to more than 500. The high-profile company was cited by economic development officials throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania as a lure to other firms’ operations here.
