regarding your comments that short against the box is a seperate transaction and doesnt affect time frame of your original investment...how sure are you? i have asked a good tax adviser and he stated just the opposite of what you posted. he mentioned code section 1233(b) explains it if you want to look it up and have the IRC code at your disposal. basically, the way it was conveyed to me is that you can't make a short term gain on your position a long term gain by short against the box.
