Silicon Graphics sees wider-than-expected Q1 loss
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct 9 (Reuters) - SGI Inc. (NYSE:SGI - news), a maker of computer workstations and supercomputers, warned on Monday that its fiscal first quarter financial results will fall short of expectations due largely to material shortages.

The company said it expects to post a loss of 28-30 cents a share, including a gain of about $50 million from the sale of selected assets, for the quarter ended Sept. 30. Revenues were projected to total $420 million.

Analysts on average expected the company to post a loss of 14 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

In a statement, the company said that material shortages related to a few specific suppliers account for the revenue shortfall and that its order backlog of Sept. 30, 2000, is projected to be $370 million.

For the second quarter of fiscal 2001, SGI said it expects revenue to be in the range of $500 million to $530 million.
