Christine, I'm posting this here in answer to your question asked of Maurice in your post #111 (Feelings thread): Maurice's answer wasn't wrong, but it didn't tell you specifically what the origin of the significance of the number 666 is.
It's significance is based upon these words in the book of Revelation, chapter 13, verse 18, which say,
"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
For the context, if you are interested, you can look it up yourself. It is referring to a "beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon." (verse 11)
Incidentally, the book of Revelation is the only book in the Bible that has an explicit blessing promised as a result of reading, hearing, understanding it. (that promise is in ch 1 verse 3) But it is the hardest to understand of all books in the Bible.
