Hi Neeka,

I just rechecked my XP Microsoft Security Essentials. Its working fine. I did have some issues a month or two ago though. The updates did disable it, I restarted it a few times, did some scans and its now working fine.

The fact that it turns red and then disappears means you might have an infection problem, or it could be just a harmless hitch.

I would go into START, ALL PROGRAMS, MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS. This should restart the program. Repeat a few times to see if the program restarts and if it goes red again.

Also check your firewall is ON.

START, CONTROL PANEL, WINDOWS FIREWALL.

Both your Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials normally will not have any exceptions, and the real time protection should be ON (ticked).

If it eventually goes green, scan your whole system, and leave it at that.

If it keeps going red I would suspect a possible infection. You could try a forum like this one...

or perhaps try a few of the other suggestions.

XP and Microsoft Security Essentials should work just fine when you finally clear the problem though.
