Sanyo Electric To Use Qualcomm System Chips For 3G Phones

OSAKA (Nikkei)--Sanyo Electric Co. (6764) will procure system chips for its third-generation cellular phones from California-based communications technology firm Qualcomm Inc., company sources said Friday.

The move is intended to control Sanyo's system chip expenditures, as developing the chips is believed to cost several billion yen.

The purchase will help Sanyo secure a stable chip supply, and will allow it to market its 3G cell phones to U.S. telecom companies with close ties to Qualcomm.

Qualcomm has developed system chips for the IMT-2000 3G cell phone service, which offers data transmission about 200 times faster than current levels.

The chip allows users to send videos and reproduce music, and is compatible with Net-based authentication systems and Bluetooth near-distance wireless communications devices. By switching software, the chip can be mounted on both W-CDMA and cdma2000 wireless mobile communications systems.

Sanyo will start producing 3G cell phones by the end of January 2002, aiming for output of 20,000-30,000 units per month.

The company plans to supply them to Hutchison Telecommunications, a major telecom carrier in Hong Kong, as well as domestic carriers.
