Congresswoman Barbara Lee's record suggests her motives:

I agree that while her single dissenting vote is notable, still more are the reasons for it. I infer from her background and activities that she sees the US as racist, sexist, xenophobic, imperialist, etc. In short, she comes off as an "America Last" type.

The thought of any representative like her (before her there was her former boss, Ron Dellums) on a security committee has to be chilling to our intelligence and covert operations people. Our constitutional system, wonderful as it is, pre-supposes that US legislators are actually committed to US interests.

James Madison's masterful study and architectural countering of factions explains how isolated legislators such as she should not be able to do harm in voting. I hope she stays isolated from intelligence and can do no harm other than in voting. Dissent can be good, at least raising issues and sharpening focus. I'd like to hear her state her case and address the obvious inferences to be drawn between her vote and her seeming past sympathy for Communism.
