Living most of my life in a steel area it was easy to see the demise coming. After years of strikes gave them very high wages and rediculous work rules they USW wanted more. Many workers on afternoon and especially midnight slept most of their shift so the could hold down a 2nd job. Then came 13 weeks vacation for about 20% of the workers..Ask the Japanese how many slept on the job or had 13 weeks vacation.
At a GM plant near where I lived in the late '70s there was turmoil when mgmt said no forgein made vehicle would be permitted to enter the UAW employee lot.
