No, it is not a direct object, because the verb 'to be', which implies no action; is used. Makes it a predicative (subject predicate) and since the 'object' is equalled with the 'subject' thru ARE, IS or AM (to be) they need to remain in the same casus as the noun!

Pro teachers have better explanations, but the case really is kind of easy as long as you ignore the bad language they all put up on TV and in movies right now.
