Don't toss your old VCR's. You can connect a VCR to your TV and play them rather well. I have a bunch that are priceless. OR, if you have enough favorites you can convert them to DVD with the many devices and programs available. Perhaps you would still enjoy those wonderful old movies, tapes full of birthdays, dance recitals, holiday gatherings, a child's first steps and other special family moments. There are many options to convert VCR to DVD, but the simplest method would be to just get a DVD Recorder / VCR combo.
