If you're still curious why Microsoft didn't back Comcast against AT&T, just look at some raw numbers: A Comcast-MediaOne combination would have given Microsoft access to about 9 million cable subscribers. Compare that to AT&T's 22 million and the decision turned out to a no-brainer.

Plus, Microsoft gets Windows CE on upwards of 10 million set-top
boxes. Speaking of the AT&T deal, the conventional wisdom is that Ma Bell's hammerlock over broadband (@Home and RoadRunner) will doom America Online. Pure overkill. Did anyone ever hear of DSL? Look for AOL to lock up DSL deals with Baby Bells in the months ahead.
