Oracle to Unveil Improved Version
Of Software for Application Servers

By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. -- Oracle Corp. is stepping up its attack on
one of software's hottest markets, programs called application servers that
help companies use the Internet to run major portions of their business.

The company, known for its widely used
database software, Tuesday will unveil Oracle
Application Server 4.0, a major revision of its
product in the field. Steve d'Alencon, an Oracle vice president of
marketing, said the product should be shipping in 30 days at a price of
about $195 for each user tapping into the system.

Application servers form a middle layer of software that manages
transactions between users' personal computers and large systems that run
companies' largest data repositories.

Among other things, they allow PC users with Web browsers to use
crucial business programs without requiring each PC to have its own
complicated piece of specialized software. Several companies have
jumped into the application-server market, including International Business
Machines Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc. and Netscape Communications
Corp.
