i understood the original question, regardless if he delivered the original stock, it is my understanding that selling short box does affect the original shares holding period and supposedly rule states that the holding period for his original shares is considered to begin on the date the short sale was closed, not his original date of purchase. maybe this discussion is better to have with a qualified accountant and not on this thread, but if anyone has definitive answer to this, i'd like to know.
