Re: DVD

Avoiding IOMG in 1996 because of concerns about DVD is like avoiding CSCO in 1993 because of concerns about ATM. You overlook two important points:

1. There is a lot of money to be made between now and if/when rewritable DVD and/or optical becomes a serious threat to magnetic media.

2. You assume IOMG's business is tied to their current product set. It isn't. IOMG is setting itself up to be the "personal storage" company, just like CSCO set itself up to be the "networking" company. You can expect to see a succession of new products and eventual acquisitions as the IOMG story continues to unfold over the next few years.

IOMG over the past year has shown that they are one of the great companies/brands in the making. Everyone talks about how they wished they got into MSFT, INTC, CSCO, etc. years ago, but years ago all of these companies had three things in common:

1. Niche products headed for certain obsolescence.

2. Chronically "overvalued" share prices.

3. Superior management and marketing.

IOMG today is where MSFT was in 1990 or INTC in 1981. At the time the future of these companies was anything but certain (is it ever?). When one decides to ride with a company for the long haul it isn't because of today's hot product but because of one's belief in a company's vision and its management's ability to execute that vision. IOMG almost single-handedly has created the "personal storage" market. If you believe that this market is real and you believe that IOMG management is focused on this market (rather than on specific pieces of technology) then you have reason for believing that they can compete and win over the long haul.
