The Left is engaged in fingerpainting while the Right is much more acute in its formulations. It doesn't have to be that way, is Buruma's ultimate point. Simple as that.

Both fail to acknowledge their presumption for increased command-and-control gov't. No one criticizes that. The assumption is buried so well that intellectuals of all stripes simply forget there is not authorization for such abuse of government.

The Right may be more acute but both are paid by the predatory military-industrial-think-tank complex to frame foreign policy questions in terms that ignore the Constitution.

Here's the test -- can you imagine any of the range of POVs in the essay leading to smaller government?
