SERBS POLICE ATTACK ETHNIC ALBANIANS IN KOSOVO PROVINCEMarch 5, 1998ÿThe crisis in Yugoslavia is escalating as breaking news reports tell of unconfirmed Serb police attacks on ethnic Albanians in the troubled Kosovo provice. Albanians are calling it a massacre with houses burning and citizens fleeing to the countryside. Serbia has been sending heavy reinforcements for its police forces in the region. Serbian officials are saying that they are responding to the provocations of the clandestine Kosovo Liberation Army which supports armed insurrection leading to independence for Kosovo where ethnic Albanians outnumber Serbs 9 to 1.

Mustafa Zhemaje, a spokesman for Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova, said, "Today's attack proves the unprecedented brutality of the Belgrade regime. The Belgrade regime has ignored warnings by the United States and European Union to calm down the situation. The arrogant behavior of the Belgrade regime makes it urgent for the U.S., EU and Security Council to stop the massacre of innocent citizens."

The increasing tensions in Kosovo are intensifying Western fears that bloodshed could spread beyond the borders of Serbia's Kosovo province and spark another Balkan war.
