i was amazed to see NBC challenge the Times story

I doubt if the degree of partisanship is really absolute, for every Lawrence O'Donnel, there are probably 10 others who still value the integrity of the profession and though they can be partisan when it is marginally safe, when it comes to facts and outright distortions, their news reporters who risk their lives to get at some of these stories will not let obvious untruths go unchallenged.

As it did for the NBC crew who were with the 101st airborne when they enterred al Qaqaa in April 2003.
