Taiwan's TWSE Index rose 80.27 to 7925.20, its biggest gain since July 28 and snapping four days of decline.

``The government will try to do everything to support the market. If it fails, people may lose confidence,'' said George Hou, who helps manage $100 million in Taiwan equities at Jardine Fleming Taiwan Investment Management Ltd. At the same time, ``the electronic sector can enjoy strong earnings growth in the second- half and attract more investors.''

Hou has 60 percent of his fund in electronic stocks and bought shares when the index fell to 8,000.

Dealers suspect government funds played small role in market gains along with tech firms buying back their shares.
