If they kept the cash in the company as cash or they buyback at market price has the same effect on the stockprice and is equivalent pre-tax to paying a cash dividend also in that the capital gain in the fomer cases should be equal to the payout in the latter. Buying back at below market prices would as you say create more total value pretax than the cash dividend. David
