Now it's my turn to admit that your words are all too true, Jim. I think the generally accepted feeling is that H2'02 will be stronger than H2'01, and sales should sequentially get stronger from there. But we could all be wrong, and things could be on a declining slope for the next 5 years - at which point competitive arguments become moot. I shudder at the thought, but anything's possible.
On the other hand, you remember Barrett's famous words. That at the end of a downturn, there are winners and losers, and the winners are usually those that have positioned themselves to come out stronger than when they went in. Perhaps Intel and AMD both fit this bill, since most of the rest of the industry has been downsizing, rather than investing in their future.
I think it's relevant, then, to discuss the competitive environment between these two aggressive companies, on the grounds that if the down economy is to end soon, one or both will be capable of becoming a very good investment.
