Hi Mihaela,

Thanks for the link. I have been looking into Reliance since I heard HP was using their chipset for their top of the line Intel based workstation. The company has had lots of success providing server chipsets which Dell have been using for some time. This new design win in my opinion is significant since it brings to forefront the issue of price/performance and the premium that has to be paid for Rambus.

Everyone expected Rambus based systems to significantly outperform older Dram designs. This has not happened to any great extent with Intels 820 and Rambus. Certainly there are instances but nothing compelling. With the 840, everyone could breath a sigh of relief....it is what the 820 should have been in the first place. Reliance, now Severworks have now got a chipset that matches the 840 in almost everyway that matters using regular PC133 Dram and HP is pushing it in their newest line of workstations. I believe a couple of Taiwanese motherboard manufactures had prototypes at Comdex using RCCs chipset as well and I doubt it will be long before we see more. Micron also seems to have reached the 840s level of performance using DDR and their latest chipsets. So if parity has been achieved in terms of performance then price is the deciding variable. This is one area that Rambus does not hold a competitive advantage at this point in time. The faster the price drops the quicker the door will close on DDR. The question is how fast will that happen.

Intels stronger relationship Serverworks is a good strategic move for Intel but not for Rambus. I doubt we will be seeing Rambus being designed into any Serverworks chipsets anytime soon. Their products will certainly use DDR in the future.

I believe in Rambus as a technology I just hope they can make it cheap enough and soon. The clock is ticking.

Good luck to all,

Alex
