I'm estimating that the 2 million mark was passed in mid-late June.
Again, I don't believe that Iomega announced exactly when they passed the 2 million mark, but I'm basing this date on the following two press releases that I found on the Iomega website (www.iomega.com). Note the use of the word "approximately" in the June 18 release and the more definite statement on July 1.
Dated June 18, 1996: Iomega has shipped approximately two million Zip drives since its introduction last year, making it one of the industry's fastest-selling personal storage products. The Zip drive is available for an estimated street price of $199.95, with 100-megabyte Zip disks available for an estimated street price as low as $14.95 each.
Dated July 1, 1996: Iomega has shipped over two million Zip drives since its introduction last year, making it one of the industry's fastest-selling personal storage products. The Zip drive is available for an estimated street price of $199.95 (U.S.), with 100-megabyte Zip disks available for an estimated street price as low as $14.95 (U.S.) each.
So, if the company passed 1 million Zips by March 15 and 2 million Zips by mid-late June, it appears that the third million sold in about the same amount of time as the second million. Of course, the exact date is the critical piece of info here. Also, info as to how many they had sold as of the end of the 2nd quarter.
Basically, if anything, these numbers would indicate that the company is selling Zips at approximately the same pace in 3Q as in 2Q, but I wouldn't base any real hard analysis on this as we don't have any really good, hard facts. |
