Hands On: CD-RW, the future of Mac removable media?

Recent price cuts and speed gains have made one standard emerge as a prominent contender for not only exchanging files, but also for backing up data and a few other practical uses. The removable media format in question is the time-tested CD-ROM...

Producing data CDs couldn't be easier. Toast allows you to simply drag and drop files into a window, where they're ready to be burned to a CD. ...

I love my CD-RW drives. I have 2 of them, and my extensive CD-R archives fill up an entire shelf safe in the knowledge that they can be read by all of the future DVD drives coming out. And CD-R media is ridiculously cheap-- A very economical means of storage indeed.

Iomega Zip? Outrageously expensive $/MB, and Slow-- CD-R's can be read at many times the speed of a Zip. And there is no guarantee that Iomega can stay in business, leaving those that used Zip for backup/arhival stranded.
